How Do Oil Free Air Compressors Work?
Oil free air compressors operate in a similar way to oil lubricated ones. Air is drawn into the compression chamber where its volume is decreased in order to pressurise the air which is then forced into the storage tank where it’s ready to use. The way this happens in oil free compressors is slightly different than in oil lubricated ones because there is no oil in the compression chamber that might result in contaminated air.
In oil free rotary screw compressors, external gears are used to synchronize the rotating screw elements to prevent the need to use lubrication on the screws themselves. The gears are in a sealed container to enable them to be lubricated, but prevent oil getting into the compression chamber. In oil free piston compressors, all the mechanical components are coated in a non-stick coating to allow the piston to move freely without the need for lubrication.
