Rotary Screw Compressors

There are no mechanical elements in rotary screw compressors which enables them to operate at high speeds with an efficient flow rate. Rotary screw air compressors use male and female rotors that move in opposite directions, pushing the air into a decreasing amount of space between them which creates the compressed air.

Industry sectors best suited to rotary screw compressors:

  • Manufacturing
  • Food processing
  • Packaging
  • Construction
  • Automotive painting

Benefits of Rotary Screw Air Compressors:

  • Durability – the typical lifespan of rotary screw compressors is between 60,000 and 80,000 hours with very little loss of capacity, meaning they will last longer than other types of industrial air compressor
  • Continual operation – rotary screw air compressors don’t use a piston which means they can be run continuously and at a lower heat. Compressors that use pistons regularly need to stop operating so the piston has a chance to cool and the related air receiver tank time to refill
  • Quieter operation – as rotary screw air compressors don’t use a piston, they are a lot quieter to operate
  • Energy efficiency – rotary screw compressors are more energy efficient than other compressors and also generate less heat
  • Easy to maintain – it’s recommended that inspections are conducted every six months, with oil-injected compressors getting yearly maintenance. Air filters need to be changed after 2,000 hours of use.

Oil-Lubricated or Oil-Free Rotary Screw Compressors:

Rotary screw compressors can be oil-lubricated or oil-free. Oil-free compressors are suitable for industries where air purity is key, such as pharmaceuticals, food and drink manufacturers, and the oil and gas industries.

Oil-Lubricated Rotary Screw Compressors

Oil-lubricated rotary screw air compressors are ideal if you need a constant demand for air.  They are efficient and hard-working workhorses that have been designed to work continuously, making them ideal for applications where power tools are needed. They are easy to maintain, and energy efficient to run and operate in all temperatures.

Fixed & Regulated Speeds

Oil-lubricated compressors come in fixed and regulated speeds, from 2.2kW to 250kW. The ability to match the power consumption with varying demand means they are energy efficient and could achieve energy savings of up to 25%.

Industry Sectors Best Suited to Oil-Lubricated Rotary Screw Compressors:

  • Aerospace
  • Automotive
  • Electronics
  • Manufacturing
  • Food and drink
  • Pharmaceutical

Benefits of Oil-Lubricated Rotary Screw Compressors:

  • Continuous, high airflow, operating a 100% duty cycle
  • Energy efficiency
  • Cleanliness – the rotating screws are so effective at sealing in any lubricating oil, very little of it ends up in the compressed air
  • Easy to maintain – oil changes are recommended every 200-500 hours
  • Long-lasting – the working life of oil-lubricated compressors can be up to 15,000 hours

Oil-Free Rotary Screw Compressors

Oil-free industrial air compressors are ideal for applications that require a pure air supply. This includes industries such as food and drink and pharmaceutics where any oil contamination in the manufacturing process can spoil a batch and interrupt production.

The parts inside oil-free compressors are coated with Teflon which enables it to work without additional lubrication. Because these compressors are made with high-quality materials, this makes the compressors easier and cheaper to maintain, with no oil changes needed, and there’s consequently no dirty oil which will need to be safely disposed of.

Oil-free compressors are efficient and reliable. They are cheaper to buy than oil-lubricated compressors and also cheaper to run. In addition, they require less maintenance which brings down the cost even further, with the additional bonus that there is no risk of oil getting into the product and the costs that that will entail.

Benefits of Oil-Free:

  • Continuous, high airflow, operating a 100% duty cycle allowing your production processes to run seamlessly.
  • Energy efficient
  • Clean – with no oil, there is no danger of contamination
  • Low maintenance – with fewer working parts, there is less to maintain
  • Lighter than oil-lubricated compressors making them more portable

Vane Compressors

Vane air compressors are widely used throughout the world and are popular for automotive and hydraulic applications. They are manufactured to work well for applications requiring moderate pressure with slower speeds of 1450 – 2800 rpm. This low speed means that the vane compressor range has a longer lifespan, moreover, its solid construction makes it a very reliable machine manufactured to function with low noise levels and be energy efficient.

Benefits of Vane Industrial Air Compressors:

  • Less noise – vane compressors produce less noise than other types of compressors meaning they can be used indoors and near the point of use
  • Energy efficient –  vane compressors have low energy consumption
  • Clean – the air produced is clean and dry
  • Reliability – consistent performance works well for a continuous air supply
  • Good suction – creates a good vacuum for efficient suction
  • Longevity – the low speed means vane compressors have an operating life of around 100,000 hours making vane compressors a cost-effective option

Portable Compressors

Portable air compressors are a diverse range of compressors that are small enough to be practical and convenient, whether you need them in the workshop or the field. This means compressed air can be taken to wherever it’s needed for on-demand air. Some only run off the mains power, whereas others can be run on diesel or petrol generators. They come in a range of sizes with tank sizes from 24 litres to 100 litres and are small enough to be carried, transported in a car or van, or towed behind a vehicle.

Make sure the portable air compressor gives you the correct air pressure (PSI) for your tools. Standard air tools need 150/200 PSI, whereas those used to inflate tyres are lower at 50/100 PSI.

Another thing to consider with portable air compressors is the duty cycle – the length of time you can use it before it needs a break to cool down. The higher the duty cycle, the longer you can run it – a 100% duty cycle gives you continuous use. The higher the duty cycle, the more expensive portable air compressors are, so you can budget according to your needs.

Benefits of Portable Air Compressors:

  • Durability – they can be used with various air tools
  • Hard-wearing – they can be used outdoors and in the rain
  • Low noise – they are usually less noisy than non-portable compressors
  • Light and compact – they are small enough to be stored out of the way when not needed

Equipment Best Suited for Portable Air Compressors:

    • Agricultural farm equipment, e.g. crop sprayer
    • Automobile – for paint shops and tire inflation
    • Dry cleaning
    • Welding
    • Air-operated tools in remote locations – metal, woodworking, nail guns, knives, drills, wrenches
    • Backup – many manufacturers keep a portable air compressor in case their static model breaks down

The longevity of your air compressor is dependent on many factors including what you need to use it for, size and type of compressor, and manufacturer.

Of the high-strength industrial air compressors, oil-lubricated compressors are the longest-lasting. A well-maintained model could last up to 15,000 working hours. Vane compressors work at slower speeds which means they could have an operating life of around 100,000 hours.

There are several reasons why you might need to replace your air compressor. Your needs may change, requiring more or less use of an air compressor, in which case it will be an easy decision to make. If you are worried about an older compressor, the tell-tale signs to look out for are:

  • Reduced efficiency
  • Pressure drops
  • More frequent breakdowns
  • Replacement parts become less easy to source or new equipment is incompatible with your compressor

There are two main configurations of air compressor tanks – horizontal and vertical. Neither is better than the other as they both have pros and cons. Horizontal tanks have greater stability and greater capacity, but vertical tanks take up less floor space and are easier to manoeuvre. So which configuration you opt for depends on your needs.

There are pros and cons to both gas and electric air compressors, so the decision as to which is better for you comes down to need.

  • Gas – gas air compressors don’t need electricity which means they are more portable and can be used in places where there is no power supply. Gas compressors tend to be heavier and sturdier as they’re used outside, making them more resilient; however, this makes them more expensive to buy. They also require more maintenance than electric air compressors. They are usually louder than their electric counterparts and emit fumes which make them more harmful to the environment and also means they can’t be used indoors.
  • Electric – electric air compressors are more practical for indoor use, are cheaper to buy and have fewer components than gas compressors, making them easier and cheaper to maintain. However, they’re less sturdy than gas compressors and will have a shorter lifespan. They come in a diverse range of sizes and power ranges which means you’ll always find one suited to your needs. The main disadvantage is that they are entirely dependent on having access to a power supply.

The average noise level of air compressors is between 40 and 110 decibels – the Health and Safety Executive recommends that personal hearing protection should be used if noise levels rise above 80-85 decibels. On the whole, rotary screw air compressors are quieter than piston compressors, but the quietest type of industrial air compressor is the vane because of the lower speeds. Portable compressors are also quieter.
