Compressed air powers production across thousands of industrial sites every day.
But where that air is supplied to air-fed masks, spray hoods, blasting helmets or breathing apparatus, it has a different job.
It needs to be safe for people to breathe.
A compressed air system may be well maintained and suitable for tools or production equipment. That does not automatically mean the air is suitable for respiratory use.
Breathing-air contamination is rarely obvious. It can come from compressor intake air, oil carryover, poor filtration, moisture, pipework contamination or changes to the site environment.
The person wearing the mask or hood may have no indication that the air supply has changed.
That is why breathing-air quality testing matters.
For breathing-air applications, the relevant standard is BS EN 12021:2014, which sets requirements for compressed gases used in breathing apparatus.
The key question is not simply: “Has the compressor been serviced?”
It is: “What quality of air is reaching the person wearing the mask or hood?”

Compressed air efficiency is about operating cost. Breathing-air quality is about protecting the people doing the work.
That deserves the same level of attention as any other critical safety control.
Air Energy can support UK sites with breathing-air quality testing, certification, system reviews and remedial work where required. Our engineers can review the full compressed air path, from compressor intake and air treatment through to point-of-use testing and practical corrective action.
If your team uses air-fed masks, spray hoods, blasting helmets or breathing apparatus, do not rely on assumptions.
If your team breathes it, test it. Arrange a Breathing Air Quality Test
Where compressed air is being used for breathing, site teams should ask:
Do we know the source and condition of our compressor intake air?
Is the system specifically designed and treated for breathing-air use?
Are filters, dryers and condensate controls maintained to the required specification?
Has the air quality been tested recently at the point of use?
Have there been any changes to the site, process, compressor or air distribution network?
Are operators using the correct respiratory equipment for the task?
Do we have documented evidence of testing and any remedial work carried out?
These questions are simple. The consequences of overlooking them are not.
